3:21 PM Posted by Vijayasri

Now that we know the important basics of sruthi, swaras, talas etc. we can move to the first lesson of carnatic music.
The first lesson of carnatic music for any student is usually finding the basic notes 'Sa','Pa' and higher 'Sa'. These swaras are called as fixed notes or achala swaras.

Another important term in any music is the pitch in which we sing often termed as "sruthi" in carnatic music. The sruthi can be adjusted according to the quality of the voice of the student and generally numbered as 4, 41/2, 5, 51/2 and so on. The instrument used to acquire this sruthi can be either Tampura or the sruthi box. Nowadays, we have the electronic sruthi boxes in the market which gives you the sruthi once you plug in them. The following audio is a sample of finding the basic notes in various sruthis ( 41/2, 5, 51/2). Clean adherence to the sruthi is a mark of good singer, so while practising it's good to sing with the sruthi box.
