The janya raagas are considered to be innumerable. The term ‘janya’ means generated. In music it represents those ragas derived from the janaka raagas. Though the number of janya raagas possible from the Janaka numbers more than 34,000 by the combination of sruti and svara patterns, many of them will be repetitions, non identifiable and non practical. They are also known as derivative ragas and secondary ragas. Janya ragas are those that take particular swara phrases associated with a mela, usually its parent raga.
Janya Raagas are classified into shadava, audava and svarantara ragas based on the number of swaras in the arohanam and avarohanam of the raaga.
