7:13 PM Posted by Vijayasri

'Oonjal' is one of the important cermony of Indian wedding ( especially brahmin Iyer weddings.

The bride and bridegroom would head to a swing (oonjal) in the mandapam after the garland exchange ceremony. Respected womenfolk of the household will then perform short rituals with classical singing to ward off "evil eyes" as the bride and groom are seated on the oonjal.

Here is a song 'kannoonjal' they sing during oonjal ceremony.

Lyrics of Oonjal Song 'Kanoonjal adi':

Ragam : Anandha Bhairavi

Kannoonjal Aadi irundaal
Kaanchana Maalai Mana maghizndaal (Kannoonjal)

Ponnoonjalil Poorithu Bhooshanangal Tharithu
Eswara naaridathil Aasaigal Romba Vaithu (Kannoonjal)

Asaindhu Sangili Aada Isaindu Taalangal Poda
Ugandhu Oorvasiyaada pankaja valli Kondaada(Kannoonjal)

Utthami Petra kumari Nithyam Sarvalangaari
Padhmathala Oyyaari Padhma mukha Singaari (Kannoonjal)
